# Any clod can have the facts, but having opinions is an art. -- (the late) Charles McCabe, S. F. Chronicle Stuff from J. Audio Eng. Soc., 3/84: On Dither (Vanderkooy/Lipshitz) -- Yes, Virginia, dither really does make a digital system behave like analog for low-level signals. Doug Sax would hate this study. On CD Phase (Meyer) -- Mr. Meyer constructs and sell boxes to linearize delay. Because of this, I am somewhat surprised that an academic rag (ah, but it is an "engineering", as opposed to an "acoustics" journal) would print his subjective conclusions, without double-blind tests. Actually, his conclusions are rather mild, i.e., that first-generation CD recorders audibly muck up phase only under extreme conditions (impulse trains & live recording, but not typical program material). Those who listen to the music and not the noise (like me) would consider Meyer's box another piece of "parasitic" engineering, typical of the snake oil history of high fidelity. -- James A.
