I think the statement "Don't use LAST" is a bit too strong.

Sure, avoid it as long as you can on normal records (if they sound good with
just some simple cleaning from the typical products like DiscWasher). But if
you have a record that you think you are going to have to throw away because
it is dirty enough to become a sandbox for the neighborhood kids, then by
all means give this stuff a try! I have brought a few records back to life
with LAST, and to me that makes the investment in LAST worthwhile. Of course,
whether or not they will last another 10 years is another matter--I'll get
back to you in 1994 and let you know.

Be very careful about selecting a record cleaning solution since many of them
can extract the plasticizers from the vinyl and damage it. Be very careful
about using the so called "record preservatives" such as LAST and Sound Guard
They may do more harm than good - in fact, Mobile Fidelity and Sheffield will
void the warranty on their disks if they find that these materials have been
used.
Personally, I stick to the old reliable Discwasher system for record care:-
Discwasher with D4 for cleaning
Discwasher's SC-2 stylus cleaner and fluid for stylus cleaning (yes, your
stylus should be cleaned frequently, just as your LP's should)
Zerostat for static removal.

Does anyone have any experiences with the need for CD cleaning and suitable
equipment to do this. It would seem that dirt on the "active" (non-label)
side of a CD could cause mistracking and errors (uncorrectable if it gets
bad enough)?

I've used both DiscWasher and LAST. I much prefer the latter -- I have
had rather impressive results with both new and old/dirty records. I only
wish they didn't make us use that G*ddam eyedropper to go from preservative
bottle to applicator. But that's only a minor gripe as far as I'm concerned.
