Regarding the way to hear compact discs before buying them: WFMT (here in Chicago, and also availavble via satellite in many other cities), now brodcasts a large part of their day using this medium. I have bought several discs based on what I have heard there. Also, I might list some of my favorites - I have about 40 now: "Songs of the Auvergne" Tate/Te Kanawa on London Bach: Barrandenburg Concertos, Marriner,Academy of St,. Marin in the Fields (by the way, this appears to come from an analog master, but it's great) Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4, Previn/Pittsburgh Symphony - I much prefer this one, both in performance and in soubnnd to the Maazel/Telarc version. The dogs: Maazel:Wagner Overtiures/CBS Maazel:Holst/Planestts/CBS These have terrible sound (or at least are not nearly as good as others). However, I have heard some good CBS discs too - the Mozart 40th and 41st Symphonies with Kubelik are goosd. Final note: One of the great things about CDs is the ability to trade them with other people and not worry about having thenm get gouged! Larry Langerholc
