A question for audioland: Why did the manufacturers that produce the compact disc (disk) players reject an FM modulated format such as Pioneer's laser disk. Could a smaller or more refined version have been produced for audio? Are Pioneer's laser disks easier to produce than CD's?

(oo) The audio compact disc corresponds to the 16-bit, 44.1 Khz sampling standards for digital recordings, thus allowing direct transfer to disc without interim processing. Some critics feel that this is too coarse a standard, but it's a standard nonetheless. -- Bob Fishell ihnp4!ihu1g!fish
