[net.audio] Dissatisfied with hifi mags

sjc@mordor.UUCP (06/14/84)

The classical music lovers who are dissatisfied with High Fidelity and
Stereo Review might consider a magazine called "Ovation", which runs
feature stories on classical music and musicians, plus reviews of vinyl
disks and CDs, plus reviews of live performances in major cities.
Coverage of audio equipment is scant and aimed at the novice.  Monthly;
free with a donation to certain public radio stations who bind their
program guides into it, or $15 per year directly from Ovation, 320 W 57
St, NY, NY 10019.

Audio-equipment tinkerers may enjoy "The Audio Amateur", which prints
construction projects, for amps, preamps, mixers, test equipment, etc.,
along with a few equipment and disk reviews. I quit subscribing about
a year ago because the schematics seemed to be yielding space to turgid
discursions on subjective listening versus objective measurement, and
because the editors seemed less interested in telling you how to build
things from scratch and more interested in telling you to buy a piece
of commercial equipment and replace all the capacitors. It was still
interesting, however. Quarterly; $18 per year from Audio Amateur, PO
Box 576, Peterborough, NH 03458.
