The latest issue of Stereo Review contains an exclusive article on dbx's first speaker, the "Soundfield One". If this speaker is as good as Julian Hirsch says, then dbx stand's to sell a lot of speakers. The name undoubtedly comes from the incredible stereo imaging produced by the 14 (yes 14!) drivers contained in the system. Each side contains a 10 inch acoustic suspension woofer and a 4 inch midrange, the top has a hexagonal array of 6 1/2 inch tweeters. The SFX-1's are not meant to be placed close to a wall or in the corner of a room, their superb imaging results from the omnidirectionality of the driver placement. There is an external control unit (the SFC-1) that comes with the SFX-1's to provide the equalization and allows the speakers to be taylored to the listening environment (note, this is not a "graphic" equalizer, it is an integral part of the speaker system). The price: $2,500 for the 2 SFX-1's and the SFC-1. I can't wait to here them at my dealer. Hirsch says "Hear it for yourself, but be prepared for dissatisfaction with your present loudspeaker system after you do." Note that the designer had only one basic goal: "the design of a stereophonic loudspeaker system whose radiation pattern has been optimized to maintain constant imaging throughout most of the listening room." -Dave
