DAK seems to have very catchy ads which appear in a number of periodicals "Scientific American", "High Fidelity", "Stereo Review", and a number of in-flight magazines. The ads seem to have one recurring theme - we've got this great deal on a piece of consumer electronics, of which there are only N left - act now! The equipment has always seemed to be (like this BSR equalizer) fairly low-end mass market gear - whether its worth the price or not, I can't say, although the prices look attractive one may be able to get comparable quality stuff cheaper from one of the local discount houses. I've never done business with DAK so I can't say how reliable they are in filling orders or making good when problems occur. As for the BSR EQ unit, it looks like a lot of low end models listing for $100- 150 made by BSR's subsidiary ADC, Radio Shack, and others. While an inexpensive EQ like this can be used to correct gross errors in room or speaker response IF one has a pink noise generator and real-time analyzer, any serious equalization requires at least a 10-band unit with an analyzer and they run around $500. I would share Mark Terribile's concerns about distortion introduced by the fiters (and not only the exotic and epherimal TIM but more real THD) in low cost equalizers. One of the reasons good eq boxes cost $500 is because their fiter circuits are designed to minimize these effiects. Bill Mitchell

I got DAK's Summer Catalog in the mail the other day. Many of the items look tempting like the Audiometric 440 watt power amplifier for $349. However I do wonder if all there stuff is really discounted or what. Who else out there has had experience (good or bad) with DAK? Michael Bishop hplabs!hpfcla!hpfclk!mike

To try and get an idea of how their prices compared with other companies, you might compare: o+ their "Thought Compressor Plus" Soundpace C-5 tape recorder ($129 + $4 p/h fee) with the Radio Shack ver- sion VSC-1000 ($119). o+ their Maxon 49S "Think Speak" VOX-operated walkie talkie ($49.95 + $3 p/h fee) with the same unit from National Tower Company, in Shawnee Mission, Kansas ($39.95). Oh yes, DAK's claim is amusing: "The system operates on 49 MHz band using FM, so you shouldn't be bothered by any other radio transmissions, as you are with CBs and Walkie Talkies." Actually, these frequencies are shared by other walkie talkies, toy remote control cars, and CORDLESS TELEPHONES! Nice catalog, but shop around. -- ========================================================================== Bob Parnass, AT&T Bell Laboratories - ihnp4!ihuxf!parnass - (312)979-5414
