[net.audio] need advice on making cassette recordings

First a word of thanks to those who sent me suggestions on how
to deal with a problem tape.

My next question (you may have gathered by now that I know little
     about tape recording gear) is:

I am considering taping all of my LP albums onto cassettes,
so as to reduce the weight and bulk of music collection. I tried
this about 15 years ago with a portable Sony stereo cassette recorder,
and had mixed results. At that time, I was not aware of the need to
properly demagnetize heads, so that undoubtedly caused some of the
     failures to get good recordings.

My big question: is this a good idea? What brands of tape
should I use? Who makes a compact but good quality cassette
recorder? I am interested in something that would not take up
much room, as I intend to install it on a cruising sailboat.
I would like something that does a good job of recording and
playing back, but I don't need a lot of sophistocated features.
I will probably run two speakers off of it. It might be nice
if it had an integral AM/FM radio, but not essential. It would
also be nice if it could run off 12V dc current.

         Comments appreciated. Rich Ganns hound!551rcg
