I have found that Dolby-B-encoded cassettes sound really *wierd* if played back (inadvertantly) with Dolby C set on the deck. I think what I'm hearing is analogous to "pumping" with dbx... it's a bit hard to describe, but the tape sounds almost as if it's cutting in and out. I've set the deck up this way accidentally once or twice and noticed the strange sounds, so I think it's something I'm really hearing. Anyone else ever hear this? (This was on a Nak LX5, which was also used to record the tapes.) {philabs,cmcl2!rocky2}!cubsvax!peters Dr. Peter S. Shenkin Dept of Biol. Sci.; Columbia Univ.; New York, N. Y. 10027; 212-280-5517
