[net.audio] Are tubes the answer?

hrs@houxb.UUCP (H.SILBIGER) (06/20/84)

The recent spate of postings touting the advantages of
recently developed "vacuum tubes" leads me to caution
readers of this newsgroup that new is not always better.
We should not abandon the tried and proven crystal
detector for the much larger and heat generating
vacuum tubes in our tuner front ends.
If this trend continues the exquisite skill necessary
for manipulating the whisker will forever be lost
to humankind, traded for as yet unquantifiable distortions.

By Jehosaphat! You're right, Herman! Do you think this is a plot
of the power companies?
Do the tube detectors sound slippery and sinusoidal to you? I
have to take a decongestant after 5 minutes of listening to them.
THey get me right in the sinus.
And a neighbor who is a ham says they interfere with his reception.
By the way, he agrees with us and is sticking to his "cohearer"
with its natural iron filings.

And perhaps radio stations in search of true high-fidelity should install
spark-gap transmitters. ( &^) )

Are tubes the answer?

Depends on the question.
