#N:inmet:2600092:000:299 inmet!ceb Jul 5 14:08:00 1984 I recently heard a pair of KEF 105.4 speakers in Worcester, MA. They sounded excellent but I am unfamiliar with the maker. Anyone have info on KEF? They were on sale at O'Coins for $1400 a pair. Is a that a reasonable price for these speakers? /ceb\ UUCP: intmet:ceb ARPA: chbrooks@ddn2

<> KEF is a very well regarded English speaker manufacturer with a long history of making excellent speakers. I can't comment on the price, but as for the speakers themselves--go for it. -- From the pooped paws of: Suk Lee ..!{decvax,linus,allegra,ihnp4}!utcsrgv!spoo

(Djinn food) KEF is a major British loudspeaker manufacturer. The 105 is their top of the line speaker, the ".4" indicating that it is now in its 4th generation. It was chosen a few years ago by the BBC to reproduce the sound of the organ in St. Mary's Cathedral (in Edinburgh, Scotland) in Usher Hall about a mile away. (The Usher Hall organ was unplayable at the time. Rather than repair it ....) They put 36 six of the speakers, each one fed by a Quad 405 amp, around the hall. I was living in Edinburgh at the time, and couldn't resist the spectacle, though I'm not wild about Berlioz' Te Deum. It came off well, very little electronic noise, and a LOT of good organ music. (KEF has a blurb about it in the March 84 Gramophone, p. 1119, if you want to know more.) Price: did you say $1400 a PAIR? If so, you're on to the absolutely best deal in sound anywhere. Grab 'em! If you said $1400 each, it's still not a bad price -- but listen around. Some of the domestic speakers, to my ears at least, sound better for the same money. Whatever, Good listening! Harold G. KEF speakers are indeed nice. KEF is a British manufacturer of speakers that has been around for a long, long time. Many recording studios use KEF speakers for monitors. Me, I've got a pair of Radfords. Any golden ears out there heard of them? Wm Leler
