[net.audio] Fordham Radio

I just received a catalog from these folks offering some nice
looking equipment at very attractive prices. I would like
to know if anyone has had any experience with this outfit.
Their mailing address is Hauppauge, NY. Any comments would
be appreciated.

I'm not terribly pleased with Fordham Radio. I went in on a group order
of various stuff from them, and bought an RF preamp for TV antenna systems.
I should have sent it back when it arrived; it came in a blister-pack which
had been opened and resealed, and had marks on it which indicated that
it might have been used. I tried using it and never could get any
evidence that it worked. (The only way I think you could determine
that would be to have a UHF signal generator and a wideband scope,
and look at the input and output; I don't.) It has been farmed out to other
people who may or may not be trying to use it; I'm just hoping that
somebody will buy it from me for some fraction of its price.

I never thought that their test equipment prices were low enough,
either, and they have a bad habit of not using Reader-Service
numbers on their ads in the electronics magazines, which annoys
me. So, on the whole, I don't recommend them.

Many thanks for the mail replies. Only one of the five letters
was slightly negative. The other four were very positive. I
guess I will "pays my money and takes your chance!"

One further comment about Fordham Radio: I've never dealt with them, but
their catalog includes one of the most comprehensive inventories of tubes
I've seen in many years. I wish I had known about them back in '77 when
I was looking all over for an arcane tube for my (sadly departed) circa-1950
Hammond CV organ... I had to redesign one of the stages to use a (supposedly
equivalent) "modern" tube in its place.

Incidentally, I have a Hammond service manual (A, AB, BC, BV, BCV, BA, C, CV,
C2, C3, D, DV, G, GV, E, RT models) which I will gladly donate to any
Hammond enthusiast who could use it. I request only the cost of postage.

The above statement is inoperative. A netter has requested the manual.
