(Phil's system, part 2.)

Since a playback system is only as good as its environment, I'll tell
you a little about that next.

The home was designed around the listening room. This room is 14 1/2'
wide by 27' long by 8' high, with symmetrically arranged doors on the
centers of the long walls. Wall studs are 2x6s on 16" centers and floor
joists above the room are 2x12s on 12" centers cross braced every 48" to
which the 5/8" sheet rock is glued and screwed. The floor is a 8" thick
monolithic concrete slab, steel reenforced. No furniture is placed in
the loudspeaker-half of the room. Equipment is located in a "closet" in
rack-mounted configuration at the furniture-half of the room. The
turntable base is mechanically isolated from this equipment rack. The
amplifier is located midway between the preamp and the loudspeakers.
Loudspeakers are positioned parallel to the rear (14 1/2') wall 32" away,
28" from the side (27') walls, and 15" off the floor.

The home on the side of a 10,000' mountain 6 miles from the nearest
highway on a culdesack. Traffic is practically non-existent. The
ambient noise level in the area and in the room is measured at less
than 35dB. To give you an idea of how quiet this is, on a calm day
(which is 90% of the time) you can hear children playing in the valley
over a half mile away and easily understand what they are saying.
