[net.audio] electronic projects for musicians

gnome@olivee.UUCP (Gary Traveis) (08/20/84)

I had heard about a book (rather old) called
electronic projects for musicians.

What I want to know is -- what kind of circuits
are used to generate both studio and stage guitar/synth
add-on effects.

In other words, what is Overdrive?
How do they define distortion? Is it clipping?

If there is a book that has an up-to-date description
of the inner workings of modern audio effects, please
let me know.

Thanks

I believe that such a book has been written by Craig Anderton who writes
a column for Guitar Player magazine. You might try calling them at
(408) 446-1105 to see if they can help locate the book.

re: Craig Anderton's book:

	 Electronic Projects for Musicians

was published by Guitar Player Books, and you can probably still order it
from the magazine.

Another that wasn't mentioned is:

	 Electronotes
	 published by Bernie Hutchins
	 203 Snyder Hill Road
	 Ithaca NY 14850

This is a newsletter format publication that deals with electronic music,
both in theory and in application. Circuits are presented in building block
form, rather than complete projects. On the other hand, the concepts
presented are more complex (and useful?). A real gold mine.

The address listed is old (1976) so it may be worth trying to call first. At
last count, Bernie Hutchins still lived in Ithaca. He is an AES member if
you have access to their directory.
