[net.audio] New magazine for CD's, and Revox CD review

I also have a copy of "Digital Audio", and agree that it's pretty
worthless, with the possible exception of the CD reviews. For
a real laugh read the "back page" article on "Why You Need This
Magazine", where the guy that started it brags about all the magazines
he's started (at least the ones that made it) and the wonderful fabulous
speakers he and his buddy used to sell...

They contradict themselves nicely: "they all sound great", "there are
significant differences".

The equipment reviews are a joke.

The whole thing comes off as something the PR people from the
CD manufactures might have come up with. (on a bad day) Only
thing missing was the cheerleaders.

Speaking of CDs, finally auditioned one last weekend, the Revox.
Sounded pretty good, with a couple of possible exceptions. The
sound was a little 'hard' or 'metallic', but that could have
easily have been due to the room and/or speakers. The other
thing I didn't like was that the music didn't seem exciting.
It just kind of sat there. There should be an emotional response,
but there wasn't. (Of course this often happens with live music
also, so maybe it's just being accurate? :-) /2 )

On the plus side, you can bang on it pretty good without upsetting it.
Good suspension/isolation. The one telarc disc they had was rather
impressive, as expected.

Other equipment was Threshold amps, Magnaplaner speakers, Mark
Levinson (swiss made!) speaker wire (at $5/ft!), and probably
Monster Cable interlinks, thou I didn't check those.

I'm thinking of dragging the ARs in and listening to it with familiar
speakers. (and having them hook up the Hafler, as long as it's sitting
there, might as well eliminate as many variables as possible)
