There is one small problem with the Yamaha CD-X1 player that I have not seen mentioned on the net. In the last issue of Fanfare magazine, their audio reviewer writes an orgasmic review of the player, but points out one small wrinkle. At any given moment when it's turned on, and not just when it's playing, the player generates a steady hum just above the noise floor that's audible only when you turn up the volume way above normal listening level. I checked this on my player, and sure enough, it's there. Again, I must emphasize that it's not normally audible, but I wonder if anything similar has been observed on other players. While you guys argue over the merits of turntables vs. CD players, I think I'll go listen to an LP of, say, Bartok's 5th string quartet, followed by, oh, my CD of Pinnock leading Handel's Water Music. Purr... Anyone interested in buying some used digital LPs? --Charles B. Francois {...,decvax}!yale!francois
