When the Postal "Service" finally delivered my copy of the October 84 Stereo Review (two weeks later than everyone else on the net), I was pleased to see the article about under $600 CD players. (AHA! CD players at the price I've been waiting for). However, I was disappointed to see the chart without any real recommendations about the really significant things -- how do the beasties sound? I'm glad to see they included the filtering info, since that seems to be the most signifcant thing about CD sound so far. There are some brands I can immediately eliminate, given their reputation for producing low or quasi-fi equipment or for providing poor service (e.g. Pioneer and Magnavox), but I'd be interested in comments about the others. Right now, it seems like the Yamaha's are the way to go, but I'd appreciate comments. Also, should one buy a Yamaha and pocket the difference (or spurge it on CD's) or spend the extra cash on a Revox or a Kyocera unit. The key factors I'm interested in are: 1) sound quality 2) sound quality 3) sound quality 4) once we've taken care of 1, 2, and 3 - error correcting ability - can it handle 900 micron gaps in the track 5) reliability 6) brand's service reputation 7) some programming - I'm willing to have to key the track #'s in in order if it buys me better 1 thru 6 performance Regards, Bill Mitchell (whuxl!wjm)
