My grandfather was legally blind the last few years of his life and he subscribed to the talking book program sponsered by the Library of Congress. He got a special cassette player and a special turntable to play the talking books. The turntable was at 8-1/3 RPM! The special records seemed to last forever. It had pretty good frequency response if all you are interested is 300-3000 Hz :-) Unfortunately, he was unable to use it since he lost his coordination, too. The cassette player had 4 tracks and also ran a lot slower than normal (15/16 IPS - eat your hearts out, golden ears :-) ) The average book (remember, this is SPOKEN) fit on 3 cassettes. Those were a lot easier for him to use. Mike Moroney ..decwrl!rhea!jon!moroney
