Some discussion has come up regarding recording your favorite tunes off of your FM tuner. I fail to see (except in certain circumstances) how this would compare with recording the same thing off of the record. If your tastes are like mine (popular, as opposed to classical), you are at a total loss if you try to record from the tuna. Dick Dunn says it right, you're likely to get chatter over the lead-in, or other annoyances. Hardly worth it for 5 minutes. (although, that's sometimes all that's worth it on some albums...1 A side, 11 D sides.) Dick misses one very important point. Popular FM stations are in a volume contest. This means that they process the audio going into the transmitter until it barely resembles the original signal. This makes it *real* loud, which helps it sound good when you listen in your MG with the top down, going 90 mph down the freeway. Unfortunately, when you listen to it in more controlled surroundings, you can hear the 4 band compressor/limiter's every suck and breathe. Nope, I'll buy the record before I record it off the FM. You classical fans have it better. Most classical stations either care about what the station sounds like, or can't afford the 10k++ that it takes to go "state-of-the-art" in processing. Hurrah for you. The situation is better for classical music, but just think of all the sonic smut between the record and your tape machine. send me no flames, Rick Chinn John Fluke Mfg.
