They consisted of concentric mylar drivers, each one having twice the area of the previous . The resolution was 8-bits, sampling was at 8khz, not even close to hifi, but usable for coarse voice messages. How is this for an idea: Digital spark gap speakers (taa daaaa!) They would consist of 16 spark gaps each, each spark gap producing twice the sound intensity of the previous one. These could be driven directly as paralell output from a digital recording at the 44khz sampling rate (or whatever the standard sampling rate is these days). The only problems that I can forsee are massive RFI generation and the creation of ozone. Granted FCC certification would be a long shot, but wouldn't it be great to own the world's only speakers with instanteous transient response and zero overshoot.
