[net.audio] SNR vs dynamic range

jj@rabbit.UUCP (10/26/84)

Signal to Noise ratio is utterly unrelated to dynamic range.

Dynamic range refers to the ratio of the maximum
continuous undistorted level and the noise floor with no signal.

Signal to Noise Ratio refers to the ratio of SIGNAL to NOISE,
with SIGNAL present. Distortion is noise, therefore, if there is
any detectable distortion, the SNR MUST be lower than the
dynamic range. It's a shade unlikely for the SNR to exceed
the dynamic range.
