Does anyone have any experience with various stylus cleaners? I am wondering specifically if Stylast works as claimed in improving the quality of sound and extending stylus life. I have a fairly good cartridge so if it does extend its life a bit it will still save me money. Does anyone have any recommendations? Tracy Tims {linus,allegra,decvax}!watmath!... One very common one is the Discwasher SC-2 brush with fluid. It makes no special claims about stylus life other than a clean stylus lasts longer and doesn't wear your recordsd as much. I find it easy to use and have had no problems with it. I clean my stylus often (about every 10) plays, but not too often because I'm lazy and because I take enough care of my records that they don't grunge up my stylus visibly even after 30 or 40 plays (using a 30x microscope to check for dust and buildup). I have never used Stylast but would be a little leary of claims of extending stylus life from a cleaning solution. I have used Diskwasher for some time now and it seems to work just fine. Diskwasher doesn't make claims of extending stylus life, but obviously keeping your stylus clean will extend it's life and the record's life. I have also used just water/acohol solution which also works fine. If you use the water/acohol solution, be sure that you wait until the stylus is dry before using. Michael N. I can't really say whether the Stylast treatment actually extends the life of the stylus. However for $15 a bottle, which, even used frequently, will last well over a year, it seems a reasonable gamble to take. I'm happy with the LAST stylus cleaner fluid. I find that I like to apply the cleaner with its supplied brush, and then use the brush that came with the STYLAST fluid to remove the debris that the cleaner fluid loosens. I don't have one of the "electronic" stylus cleaners (one marketed by Audio-Technica, another marketed by Madrigal, both approx $30), but I've heard that they are extremely effective. - Greg Paley

My favorite is that discwasher decided they could bilk people out of
a little more money by putting D-3 in a little bottle and calling it
SC-2. My stylus brush said to use D-3 on it (it is one of the early
ones).

I have used Stylast myself, and tell you it doesn't prolong the life of my cartridges! I've fumbled my way through breaking two styli through accidents and the Stylast didn't help one bit! David Sullivan sullivan@nyu.arpa ....!ihnp4!cmcl2!sullivan

[] They told me the paint on my VW rabbit was a lot tougher than American paint, but that didn't help when I had my accident. It's the thought, if any, that counts. Dick Grantges hound!rfg

Personally, I've had good luck with Discwasher SC-2. Even if you use Stylast, you still MUST inspect your stylus for wear periodically A worn stylus will Destroy all the records it plays (another case for CD's). Generally inspection is recommended after 300 hours of use, and then every 100 hours after that. You can do it with a microscope, but if you're unfamiliar with what good and bad styli look like (especially on the more complex multi-radial tips) most dealers provide complimentary inspection service.
