I have a Sony compact stereo ,model CFS885 Recently it blew a fuse.I replaced the fuse and tried to play a cassette tape;the tape played for a few seconds before the cassette stopped playing.Holding the play switch in, the cassette will play the tape, but the second the play switch is released the cassette stops. I have checked the play switch and it seems to be Ok. does anyone have any idea what's wrong? A.G.Kaim ho 3B333 (201)949-5899 AT&T Bell Labs., holmdel N.J. 07733

I had a similar problem with my cassette deck but I did not have a blown fuse to start with. My deck is old enough that a solenoid is used to release the mechnical pause for timer recording. One day, I turned it on after deciding not to record and held the pause button down. The solenoid went anyway after a suitable delay and my deck wouln't play after that. It turns out that the bar that was pushed by the solenoid was bent slightly due my holding the pause button and jammed the solenoid so that the pause was disabled and all other functions. Since the deck was out of warrantee, I pulled it apart and unjammed the mechanism. On the other hand, this probably doesn't sound like your problem. The lock mechanism for your function keys may have been damaged physically. Sorry if I can't be of more help. Herb... I'm user-friendly -- I don't byte, I nybble.... My first guess is that the tape you are trying to play is bad, or some part of the unit is excessively dirty. This would cause increased resistance to tape travel. Carried to the extreme, this might make the unit think that it had reached the end of the tape, which probably causes the unit to shut off. If my unit had that problem, I'd clean the heads and tape path thoroughly and try using a different tape before doing any further testing/repair.
