I recently purchased a Yamaha CD-X1, and on a couple of CDs, I get a "tap tap tap tap..." on the right channel. The sound is very much like short bursts of white noise in rhythm. It tends to last for a few seconds, fades away, and possibly repeats. It doesn't happen on all tracks either. The funny part is that it only happens on a couple of CDs, namely "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" by Elton John, "Exit" by Tangerine Dream, and there's a ~10 sec. disturbance on "The Flat Earth" by Thomas Dolby. None of my jazz CDs are affected (as I recall). My collection is close to 25 discs now, so it seems it's not an obvious fault in the player. Do any of you have these CDs? Has anybody experienced the same problem on different players? Do any of you have a Yamaha CD-X1? Any horror stories about the CD-X1? Does anyone know of BAD pressings in general? I haven't had a chance yet to play them on the Music Dept's Sony CDP-701 (I think that's it) yet to see if it's repeateable. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. I have a SONY CDP-701 and play mostly classical CDs. About 4 or 5 of my 20 CD library go "tap tap tap..." in the same place - most noticeably, of course, in pianissimo spots. I figured it was the same hyper-critical poltergeist who scratched all my LPs at first playing. I have heard something similar to short burst of noise only once in my 80 CD collection, that was when I brought home Frida's "Somethings Going On Around Here" CD. I looked very carefully at the substrate containing the digipits and noticed some bubbles in the vinyl covering about a half inch span toward the outside of the disc (the noise occured during the last song). I attribute the noise to the inability of the error correction logic to handle the high number of errors that were occurring. Note that on my Sony CDP101 the sound of the noise was also muted. In any event, the disc was obviously defective so I returned it for another which works just fine. I recommend that you try your discs on the same model of CD player at your stereo dealer and see if the same noises persist. Also look at the substrate with a magnifying glass to check for any obvious defects, remember, CDs play from the inside to the outside of the disc. Good Luck, -Dave

I assume that the noise doesn't sound like it's supposed to be there. Have you checked to see if there is a defect on the disk large enough to cause this? Also try cleaning the disk. The sound you described couold be an error too large to correct, but I think that most CD players these days mute when this happens. Herb... I'm user-friendly -- I don't byte, I nybble.... Have your unit re-aligned. My Yamaha did that very thing, it usually did it in time with the music so that I really didn't notice it at first. I didn't catch on until I noticed that it wasn't the same from play to play. I took the thing back and the repair guy said the thing was out of alignment. Since he aligned it I haven't heard those noises. Dave arpa: Sewhuk.HENR@Xerox.ARPA uucp: {allegra, rochester, amd, sunybcs}!rocksvax!dave
