Well, it's time. My old Radio Shack receiver (Hey! it wasn't THAT bad) is developing wierd noises. Even my wife agrees it has to go. Having let my subscriptions to Stereo Review and High Fidelity lapse when they turned into MTV reviewers, I am not well acquainted with current offerings. The salesman I talked to at a local shop seemed more concerned about whether the receiver would match my carpets (Really). The equipment review issue of Audio seems to be no longer available (maybe I can find it at the library). What I would like is suggestions for a new receiver for my system. I am not a soi-disant `golden-ear', though I do appreciate good sound. I can't afford too much, anyway. So here is what I want: Receiver with 40-50 watts RMS per channel, 'good' FM section, prefer 2 tape inputs. Preset FM stations would be nice but are not essential. I don't care about 'digital tuning' unless it works better. I don't care what it looks like either. I don't need MC inputs. I don't need remote control. It should cost around $250-$300, discounted. The rest of my system is a BIC-960 turntable with a Pickering cartridge (It's next to go), Pioneer cassette deck, Sony reel-to-reel and Radio Shack Optimus-7 speakers (HEY! They sound pretty good, OK? They were the top of RS's line when I bough them, and RS top-of-the line is not bad for mediocre stuff). Are my desires unreal? Or can any of you experts out there give me a hand? Mail please; "I will summarize for the net if demand warrants it". -- Berry Kercheval Zehntel Inc. (ihnp4!zehntel!zinfandel!berry) (415)932-6900
