Let me first explain that I am the owner of audio equipment consisting of an AR (old) turntable, a Dynaco integrated amp (40 watts per side into 8 ohms), and Advent speakers. A friend replaced the AR tonearm with one of his own design. Many readers will consider this low-fi and I have to agree. This weekend I decided to improve my system. I did this by purchasing a Linn Basik arm (which comes with the Linn Basik cartridge), and a Rondel mat. After much hacking on the AR turntable I had the arm installed. The difference in the sound was simply increadible. I couldn't believe it. The sound was cleaner with much better stereo imaging and even a hint of front to back separation as well. This little adventure has prompted me to think about upgrading everything. Of course money is an issue but I'm not sure what spending more money gets me. I'm looking to buy a pre-amp and amp and speakers. The age of my equipment should tell you that it has been a while since I have bought audio equipment. Can I get a good pre-amp/amp and speakers for $1000? If not, how much more do I need to spend. If $1000 is reasonable, what are your suggestions for systems? -- Marty Sasaki Havard University Science Center sasaki@harvard.{arpa,uucp}
