I am currently in the process of upgrading my 7 year old system. I will list the components that I have bought or have decided to buy and then ask the questions. Pre-Amp ??? Power-Amp Hafler DH-220 Tuner Carver TX-11 Turntable ??? Cartridge Shure V15-V MR CD Player * Yamaha CD-2 Cassette Deck * Nakamichi RX-505 Noise Reduction Unit * dbx 224X Loudspeakers JSE-1 * = already purchased This should give you an idea of what kind of a system I am putting together. I need some help deciding on the ??? entries. I don't have much knowledge of the state of current technology, so this is why I am thrashing. I probably want to spend around $500 or so for the pre-amp and $300 or so for the turntable. The thing I am going for is SOUND QUALITY. I also like nifty features, but not if they interfere with the prime condideration. Giving credit where credit is due: many of my choices were based on recommendations from Bill Mitchell (especially the Nak). He is right, the Nak is an awesome machine. A quick statement about the Yamaha CD-2: some people had complained of earlier version having problems (the CD-X1?). I could not get the CD-2 to mistrack by tapping the table or the unit (hitting is probably more accurate a term than tapping). I also picked up the unit and tilted it in several directions. Again no problems. For $600, it is a very solid performer (and it comes with a wireless remote -- like I said, I like nifty features). If people want to hear more about some of the other stuff I bought, I could post more of a review. While I'm at it, does anyone recommend any particular timer unit? I'm not sure what functionality I will ultimately want, but what are good units? If I get a good timer, I can throw out my old crufty alarm clock and use the CD-2 or the Nak to wake me up. I'd prefer personal replies, but if you think the reply is of sufficient interest to the net, you can post to the group. Gordon Strong {ihnp4, decvax!genrad}!mit-eddie!gs GS@MIT-XX
