A recent article in Popular Science, the "What's New" section had a brief
blurb on some new car CD players from Sony and Pioneer. The Sony CDX-R7 and
the Pioneer CDX-1. The Pioneer Player has a seperate "operating" module
(what goes in the dash) and the "processing" module (mounts under the seat).
Anyone know when these will be available, price, and/or specs? Thanks.

Well, just before going to bed last nite, I was flipping through the
channels on cable and came across a commercial on MTV from Sony saying that
a car CD player and a Walkman-type CD player were going to be available in
November(at least the ad said "Coming in November").

Well, has Sony really ironed out all of the bugs associated with a
car CD???? I thought they weren't supposed to be out until next summer???

This month's Road & Track (December) has an advertisement for the
new Sony AM/FM CD player. I saw (and listened) to a prototype
at the Boston Auto Show and the dealer said that they would
be available for sale at the beginning of December.

Sony has introduced an in dash player which by all reports survives
rough roads very nicely. My Sony CDP 101 home unit will not mistrack
when dropped a quarter inch. Given proper servo design, there is no
inherent miracle involved in accomplishing these feats.

In the latest issue of "Digital Audio", they review the Sony CD-X5
car CD player. One comment they had was:

The author refused to get in a head-on collision with
a Mack truck ... but he did travel over some rough
terrain. Some of southeastern New England's most
cavernous potholes couldn't stop the CD-X5.

(Quoted probably without permission)

The CD-X5 is just a CD player, there is also the CD-X7 with an AM/FM
tuner. Both need to feed an amp capable of driving speakers from
"line-level" inputs.

Overall it seems that car CD players ARE practical (the unit had a DIN
size faceplate) and now a reality (although no price was listed).

Last I heard about car CD's is that Pioneer was on the
threshold of introducing one, but that it was too 'sensitive
to road conditions' and has consequentially been withdrawn from
it's early release.

Try tapping a CD player while it's on one day - you'll
see what I mean!
