Someone told me that recording some source on a metal tape
with a deck using normal bias would damage the tape. Is this true,
and if so what type of damage occurs, and why?

I don't beleve you can damage tape by underbiasing it. The recording will be very poor but the next time you record over it with proper bias (and erase) all will be ok. Sounds like another tail to frighten the children... Steve Falco "Look at all the little piggies..."
