[net.audio] length of line-level cables to/from VCR

sdyer@bbncca.ARPA (Steve Dyer) (12/29/84)

My VHS HiFi deck is located about 20' away from my stereo components,
so in order to record FM simulcasts and play back through my stereo
system, I'll have rather long runs of cables carrying line-level
signals. Are there any problems which could arise from this--
frequency response aberrations, increased noise or hum, etc.
Should I buy special cables, or will any rotgut $1.99 department store
cable do?

If the source impedance of the driving circuit is reasonably low (< 1000 ohms)
you should be able to use common or garden variety cables with no ill effects
frequency-response or noise-wise. Widespread night-fears to the contrary, you
could probably get away even without shielding unless the signals venture
through heavy-duty magnetic fields (electrostatic fields are unlikely to
be a problem, since capacitive coupling wiull be ineffective at low Z.

Watch out for ground-loops or the like- there's the most likely source of
corruption. Also beware RF interference (maybe you'd better use shielded
cables after all!)

I cannot imagine NOT using shielded cable for the audio/video line level
cables! There is just *TOO* much 60 Hertz stuff flying around.

Sony offers cables they recommend for video level signals in 1 meter and 3
meter lengths, they also have audio level cables in 1.5 meter and 2 meter
lengths. Awfully nice of them to keep them even so they can be tie-wrapped
nice and neat don't you think? Sony also offers a 1 video and stereo audio
cable in one nice cable package, but I haven't seen it in any stores yet.
