[net.audio] Heathkit Pro-Series being pahsed out?

hbb@hou5a.UUCP (H.B.Braude) (01/04/85)

An examination of the last three seasonal Heathkit catalogs
indicates that Heathkit has decided to do away with their high-
end stereo kits. I come to that conclusion since two seasons
ago, the catalog had all of the Pro-series components and the
catalog distributed last season had the audio tuner kit
replaced with another manufacturer's preassembled product
(without having offered their usual last-chance warning in the
preceding issue either.)

This season's catalog has the pre-amp kit replaced and the rack-
mount cabinet displayed as a last-chance item.

This means that they will probably sell other manufacturer's
products as a component system, but these will all be
preassembled.

Your right!, Just received my catalog today.
What is Heathkit coming to? Maybe they will be Heathassembled
next year.

I,for one, won't cry a bit (well, maybe a little bit) if Heathkit
as a whole is phased out. I speak as one who years ago built dozens
of heathkits and still have many moldering away in my basement.
In my humble but firm opinion it has been literally decades since
heathkits were worth a damn on a cost/performance basis. The costs
went sky high and the performance went to hell, but the advertising
improved apace.
Off hand I recall:
The audio mixer whose power supply was designed as a giant amplifier
for a noise generator.
The Audio sweep generator advertised to cover "3 decades" that wouldn't.
The color tv with a focus system that didn't.
Despite such boobles, I only swore off them for good when it became
possible to buy better for much less. Sic Transit Gloria Mundi.
