[net.audio] CD's and SONY "discman"

SONY player:
I've a had the portable SONY player for a couple of months
now and have enjoyed it greatly! I abuse quite a bit by bringing it
to and from work almost every day. I've also taken it apart and poked
around inside. A friend who recently bought it too got the SONY AC-D50
adapter that plugs on the back of the player. It has an AC line cord and
two RCA phono jacks on the back instead of the stereo mini-jack. Mine came
with the standard plug mounted AC adapter (AC-190). To avoid bring cables
and power supplies to and from in addition to the player I bought extra cables
and an AC adapter at Radio-Shack. The output of the AC-190 was 800ma and the
Radio-Shack one only 300ma so it stutters when starting up when the RS adpater
is used but is otherwise working fine. The AC-D50 plug in is only 500ma so
be sure that you have 500ma or greater if you are using another adapter.
I'm going to buy the AC-D50 adapter and will probably punt the RS one.

CD's:

In the Computer Science/Robotics Institute at CMU
we have quite a few people with players and
have subsequently ordered many discs from several vendors.

	Compact Disc Centre:
In the popular section for quantity > 10 almost everything
is $11.99. CDC also has a single shipping charge of only $2
Their latest catalog is the best laid out CD catalog I've
seen. They also are fast. Ordered Monday and had it by Friday.
We've ordered from them several times with no problems.

	Classical Diversions:
If you are careful and check all prices with the various
vendors you may find that this place even with their
		ridiculous shipping charge ($2.25 1st .50 thereafter)
it may be cheaper here. We ordered enough from this place,
though, that they waived the shipping charge! Many labels
		were $10.99

	Laury's:
Laury's had a great special on Telarc discs for only $9.98
each for awhile. They've sold all of 'em but they may have
specials in the future. Their newest catalog however is
designed by morons. Ordering is by Label and then by
number!!! As opposed to Style/Artist listings. Blech.
Their normal prices are fairly high.

Other opinions	: All Disc Music - Awful prices
Capitol Record Shop - doesn't list prices you have
					to call them. Pain-in-the-neck.
			  The Essentials - Awful prices.
Music Supermarket - prices are a little high
					and selection isn't that good.
OZ Records - resonable prices and selection but
					$1/item shipping charge (max $7)
Earthtune - they have no phone and haven't delivered
on an order placed over a month ago.
Took a couple of months when it
finally arrived. I don't like to
order from places that have only
a po box and no phone or address
					listed.

If you order many CD's (getting several people together helps a lot)
you might be in a position to ask for quantity discounts even from those
who don't list such a policy. Of course you have to talk with
someone able to make this decision. But a little haggling can be very
worthwhile.

Certain Imports are hard to get. Pink Floyd has sued CD makers because
CD's weren't specified in their original contracts. Many dealers pulled
certain Pink Floyd CD's from the shelves so they are hard to get ahold of.

I know Sam Goody's on the East coast had a sale on CD's for awhile before
X-mas and the store I visited in Westport CT while I was home had a pretty
good selection. It seems that all the major record chains are now carrying
CD's and are lowering prices.

If there are other inexpensive places to order CD's from please post
or mail to me. Getting ahold of an importer would be a neat thing. CD's
are going for $8 in Hong Kong!

I just called Classical Diversions and found out that they
"are out of business due to the serious illness of the owner".

One less CD mail order house...
