[net.audio] cleaning cassette pinch rollers

hugh@hcrvx1.UUCP (Hugh Redelmeier) (01/22/85)

I want to clean my cassette deck's pinch rollers. I have been told
that alcohol dries rubber and rubber-like stuff out, so don't
use it. In my investigation, I have been told the following
facts/factoids by various unreliable sources.
- isopropyl alcohol is OK
- lighter fluid is great (a Radio Shack person said this,
suggesting I not buy the RS "Freon TF" stuff because the
  lighter fluid is cheaper)
- at RS, the isopropyl is roughly twice as expensive as the
  stuff with "Freon TF" (trifluoroethane??)
- the Akai tape cleaning kit from a discount HiFi store
(with two bottles of liquid, one for metal parts, one
for rubber, and some swabs) costs about 7 time what the
RS Freon TF stuff does (the bottles are bigger, but not
  that much)
So: what is the advice of the net? Mail to me; I will post
a summary if warranted
