Is there any standart for *digital* audio interconnections? It seems that CD players, PCM audio systems and possibly other digital audio-equipment (say a digital equilizer) will need digital interconnections, defering the D-to-A conversion to the last point in the chain (this could be an active Box with one DAC/filter/power-amp for each speaker system, where the band-splitting and individual equilization is done digitally -- think VLSI). To be more precise: 1) Is there a CD-player available that has a connector on the back that gives the stream of 16bit-words after the error-correction logic and before any filter/over-sample operation? 2) Is there a PCM encoder that accepts 16bit-words instead of an analog input? 3) Are there other digital audio-sources in use or planned (such as synthesizer, microphones [there are methods for precise analog-air-pressure to digital-electrical signal], etc) ? Please send mail to: agn@cmu-cs-k.ARPA or: ...!seismo!cmu-cs-k!agn Thanks -- Andreas

You just need to tear into it.

They don't have digital outputs yet. Both Yamaha and Kurzweil are planning computers to allow users at the digital samplings. Yamahas looks kind of disappointing. The Kurzweil involves connecting their sythesizer to a McIntosh. Superb synthesizer but at over ten thousand dollars, it's a little too steep for me. -Ron
