Hi. I finally decided to get a reasonable car stereo (now that I'm getting a reasonable car =). When I went to a local dealer I heard an impressive speaker system consisting of a 8" woofer and a ribbon tweeter. the whole thing ran for about $110. It sounded better than a lot of home speakers costing twice as much. Now for the tricky part... I (being the cheap student that I am) have managed to find a comprable set of drivers for about half the price. The only difference is in that the woofer is an 8 ohm instead of the standard 4 ohm. Would this cause any horrible problems with an amp, given that it is powerful enough to handle the higher impedence? Further more is there a simple way to make a good 12 dB crossover? I can fake a couple with the circuits courses I've had, but I'm open for suggestions. The second question pertains to a front end for the system. What I'm looking for is more or less a quality tapedeck with a cheap radio attached in case I forget to bring along a tape. Quality implies a reasonable frequency response, low noise from the motors, preferrably dolby (either only b, or b&c)( because listening to dolby tapes without the decoding gets on my nerves more than the noise from the tape would) and anything else you'd like. I don't care whether it is has a digital display, or whether the tuner has presets, or any other fancies. Remember, I'm a college student. I'd like something in the $180-200 range. (It will be used with a separate amp, BTW, so power doesn't matter) Finally, are there any suggestions for theft protection. Personally having it mounted in a slide bracket under the dash appeals to me the most, but in my car that's a little bit difficult. Again, price is at a premium, although I'll go to a reasonable length to protect my investment. advTHANKSance -- ihnp4--\ fritzz the Zebra decvax--\ akgua----\ "What else do you do for fun?" dcdwest---\ "I go to funerals." hamvax-----\ ucbvax-------- sdcsvax -- sdcc3 -- fritzz

I've been a fan of ALPINE car stereo systems for a number of years. They have some very impressive tuner/tape decks that start in the <$200 range. If you haven't heard of ALPINE decks, they are the standard equipment on Lamborghini cars. Have fun listening to those tunes! Harold Noyes !hplabs!hp-pcd!harold

Wrong!! Lamborghini has been for the past year using the same stereo that I own, The concord 532. It started after Mr. Lamborghini had one installed in his contauch. Yet, alpine continues to lie. Jim Zeek @ Pyramid Technology (pyramid!zeek)
