[net.audio] Ordering CDs

Some comments on mail order CDs:

People on the net have mentioned some CD mail order places,
in particular Laury's (1-800-CDDISKS) and the Compact Disc Centre
(1-800-CDCENTR). From my limited experience (I haven't ordered
anything yet), I can't say I'm all that pleased with either.

I called Laury's last November for their catalog, and never received it.
I called again a week and a half ago and tried again. They claim
they put out a new catalog monthly, but I still haven't gotten anything
yet. I sure hope they're better with orders.

I received the Compact Disk Centre's catalog 2 days after I called (!).
Most prices for Classical music were $15.99 ($14.99 if part of any order
of 10 or more). My complaint is with their definition of 10 or more.
According to their catalog, if you order 10 disks, and they are
out of stock on one of them, you don't get the good price, since they're
only shipping 9. Even worse, their 800 number is for *ordering* only.
They will not (cannot) tell you at that time if they are out of stock,
so you pays your money and you takes your chances.
They suggest you order a few extra disks to ensure that your order
stays above the limit of 10!

I think that this sort of business practice deserves NO patronage.

You don't have to order extra disks to get your discount, just provide
alternate selections (i.e. order 10 and provide 5 alternates Then if they
are out of stock on 2-3 of the original 10, they will replace those 2-3
with discs from your alternate list. You may provide them with 15 discs
but you're getting and paying for 10). I see no problem with this policy
as it seems to be a common one. Laury's doesn't do it but then you don't
get a discount from them.

This may be repeating myself but after reading the notes again, I wanted
to make sure this point was clear.

(Sorry for the duplicate response.)

I called about a week and a half ago, and still no catalog. California
*is* still in the same continent, isn't it?

I recently found that the regular price of CD's (at least the Pop/Rock
CD's) is $11.99 at the Wherehouse, a local(?) chain. I understand the
regular price at CD Centre is $12.99, and you get a buck off if you
order 10 or more. Doesn't make much sense to mail order with the prices
like that. Hopefully if enough chains around the country start pricing
CDs competetively, the mail order prices will come down. Which may
bring the local prices down some more.

I didn't look at the prices of the Classical discs, as the Wherehouse I
went to (South Coast Plaza) has all their classical stuff, including CDs
in a vault.
