[net.audio] Pevey vs TOA Speakers

harold@hp-pcd.UUCP (harold) (02/22/85)

I'm looking for specific advice on a choice between two different
speakers. These speakers are to be used for a portable dance/disco
system in the 160 Watts RMS per channel category. I had been
considering Klipsch LaScalas previously, but they seem to be the
"Cadillac" version at $1500 for the pair. Both of the speakers I
am currently considering are in the ~$950 per pair range.

The first is the Pevey (sp?) Project Five sound reinforcement
speaker. They seem well suited for the aplication (heavy duty
construction, good components, etc.) but have a limited frequency
response (60hz-16Khz). Also, they are not horn-loaded.

The other is a speaker from TOA (anybody ever heard of these guys?).
They seem to be the same heavy duty construction, have an extended
frequency range (30hz-20Khz), and are in the same price range.

Please share any knowledge of the two manufacturers and their
reputations (especially TOA- I'm fairly familiar with Pevey).
Also, any specific feedback on these speakers?

Thanks in advance for your halp.

Sincerely,

Harold Noyes

We fell in love with ElectroVoice Sentry IV(B?) big black folded
horn jobs. They're the only decent speaker that electrovoice makes.
Plenty of efficiency for deafening disclones and not that heavy (although
rather bulky). The sound good too.
