[net.audio] The SONY D-5 "Discman"

rjd@linus.UUCP (Robert DeBenedictis) (02/27/85)

Hi.

I just plunked down (last week) full list price ($299.88 + 5% = $314.88) for
the SONY D-5. I know that I could get it mail order for less than $250 (at
least that's what International Hi-Fi said they'd sell it for).

So why pay more?

Well, listen to this deal that Q Audio, in Cambridge, MA is offering.
You buy a D-5 at $299.88 and they'll throw in:
	1. Five Free Discs (some labels excluded);
	2. As many CDs as you want at $10 for Rock/Pop, $11 for Classical/Jazz
(again, some titles excluded AND they must all be ordered at once); and,
	3. The right to return any CD for any reason and get a full credit
towards another CD (as long as you retain your proof of purchase).

It sounded like such a good deal that I rushed down and gave the man my
money. He says he should have his next batch in by March 5th. We'll see.

Do you think this deal is really as sweet as it sounds?
They were a little vague on exactly which labels are excluded; at these
prices does it make a big difference?

>Does this deal sound too good to be true? Maybe...

I just got my new Service Merchandise catalog (1985 Spring & Summer).
They are selling the D5 for $227.87 but they won't be available until
until 3/15/85 (line forms Friday morning behind me :-) ).

At the same time, Sony has a deal going on the price of Discs. If you
buy a disc player before the end of April, you can buy as many discs
as you want for $7.99 apiece. The catch is you only have a list of
30 to choose from. This deal will apply to your purchase also and, in
fact, may be what they are referring to.

Any good record store will probably let you return a disc for replacement
or exchange if you aren't happy. After all, you aren't going to damage
it any and they want to keep a good relationship with you.

So what you end up with is the ability to buy records for a couple of
dollars cheaper than most record stores. This will probably change over
the next few months as more and more players are sold. You have to
decide if you will buy enough discs from your dealer to overcome this
price difference. In any case, happy listening...
