[net.audio] cd sale prices / Verve recordings excellent / D-5 problem

richard@telesoft.UUCP (Richard S. Kaufmann @king) (03/04/85)

Over the last two weeks, the dominant price of CDs has tumbled from
$14.95 to $11.98. All these prices, except Licorice Pizza's, are
"sale" prices. However, my reading of the tea leaves tells me that
these prices will soon become the norm (see below).

Tower Records	(used to be)	$14.95	(and now is)	$11.98
Licorice Pizza $12.98 $12.98
Wherehouse $14.95 $11.98/$12.98
Musicland $15.95 $15.95(!)

Exceptions:

Telarcs range from $14.98 to $17.95. (Licorice Pizza is cheapest.)

The Wherehouse sells "Realtime" CDs for $20.95. That's gall!
(Realtime produces nicely recorded jazz discs.)

The guy at Musicland was embarrassed about his prices; he told me
that Telarcs would be on sale at $12.98 soon.

Supply:

The word is that Tower / San Diego will be receiving 3000 (yup, 3000)
new CDs this week. Is it possible that production capacity has increased
substantially recently? Will this keep these sale prices permanent?

Verve Recordings Excellent!

I now own a pile of the Verve "Silver Collection" CDs. They are all
real gems, but here are some favorites among favorites:

Ella Fitzgerald: The Cole Porter Songbooks (vol I and II)
Mono (with a little synthesized stereo, perhaps).
	Incredibly well-recorded incredible voice!

Porgy and Bess, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald
	Stereo, again nicely done.

All of the Verve recordings seem to be made by Polygram, W. Germany.

Sony D-5 Problem?

Before I take my D-5 in for repair, I'd like to find out if others have
the same problem...

(1) There is a considerable noise emanating directly (i.e., not through
the amps) from the D-5. A major component of this noise is "chirping."
This chirp is high frequency, and is distinct from the general "whir"
    one expects from CD players.

(2) This same noise, at a reduced level, gets mixed with the audio signal
and can be heard through the speakers.

My D-5 is set up in a different room from the speakers, so I am not
dreaming. The noise is audible only between rock cuts, or in quiet passages
of classical CDs.

System: D-5 -> Audio Research SP-6b -> pair of strapped Audio Research D-52Bs
	-> pair of Linn Isobariks.
