Last year my roommate had a Nakamichi, so I got to try switching tapes between it and other decks. There was a noticeable difference in high frequency response. This was a somewhat old Nak, though, and I believe the difference is less now. Nakamichi has published brochures explaining that they follow the standard for EQ and always have, and that any problems are thus due to other manufacturers failing to follow the standard. When I bought a new tape deck, I looked at the Nak BX-100 and BX-150, but I ended up buying a Harmon-Kardon CD191. (Yes, that is a cassette deck not a CD player.) I have been quite satisfied with it.
