You don't have to pay $700+ to get a reasonably high quality MC step-up device.
There are several good units selling for around $300 or so. I have the
Audio-Interface CST-80 transformer which works very well - I'm using it with
a Denon DL-207 going into my Hafler 110 preamp. In this price range, I prefer
a transformer, rather than an active amp, since it provides better noise
performance. Most high quality transformers will provide excellent frequency
response comparable to that provided by good active head amps.
