Thanks for all of you that gave me their opinion on Magnavox (alias Philips)
CD players. I made up my mind and got one: the "top-of-the-line"
Magnavox player (model FD3040). I have had it for only 5 days,
so I don't have any opinion yet concerning its reliability,
but so far I am very happy with it.
It has quite an impressive list of programming features (probably
too many! I don't expect to use a lot of them, but you never know...)
and have remote control. The best fearture is probably the
price: $368 from Stereo Discounters (UPS delivered it at my door exactly
a week after my phone order) compared to $600 list-price.
Of course it is a Philips player (the corresponding European model is
called CD304) and therefore uses the 4x oversampling - "digital filters"
and 14-bit D/A converters.
However, contrary to several comments on the net about Magnavox
players being built in Belgium (Home of Philips), mine was built in....
JAPAN!!! (At least that what it says on the manifacturer's box)
I wonder if Philips decided that manifacturing in Japan is cheaper after all.
If anyone is interested, I will post my impression on this player
when I have more experience with it, or sooner if some trouble develops!
