Although Equalization can help correct problems with speaker response in a particular room, it should not be viewed as a panacea for all speaker problems. Equalization cannot correct phase response probems, nor can it correct speakers with poor imaging characteristics when these are not caused by frequency response problems. Although there have been several commercially successful speaker systems that have provided EQ to correct for known frequency response probems (and allowed the speaker manufacturer to use lower cost drivers or less elaborate cross-over networks) - the Bose 901 is probably the best known - I prefer to start with a speaker with excellent frequency response and then use the EQ to clean up the problems when it is placed in a real listening room with furniture, people, pets, and other objects that cause problems with ideal sound dispersion.
