[net.audio] Enhancing CD Players

schley@mmm.UUCP (Steve Schley) (03/28/85)

A friend and I are planning to modify a Philips CD player (Magnavox
2040) along the lines of Meridian and Mission. If all goes according
to plan, we will be putting our modifications into an article for Audio
Amateur magazine. However, I think that some of the readers of this
newsgroup could help us (and ultimately many others) do this up right.

If anyone out there in net-land has information on good modifications
for CD players, or just some suggestions, please send me mail.

I am also interested in contacting someone who has a good understanding
of the Philips digital signal processing techniques. Anyone out there
fitting this description? I'd sure appreciate your getting in touch
with me (via mail, of course).

As an aside, the Magnavox 2040 appears to be the answer to the budget
audiophile's dream. If you have been reading the net, you are aware
that the Philips-based players (4x oversampling, ...) simply sound
better than the Sony-based players. What's more, since the
Philips-made players are marketed over here by Magnavox and Sylvania,
they show up in discount stores at very nice prices. I just bought a
Magnavox 2040 for $249 (that's right, two-four-nine!) at a local
discount store. Sounds good right out of the box, but just wait until
we're through...

Thanks in advance for any information you folks send my way.
