[net.audio] Seeking advice on mid-fi

dba@cmu-cs-k.ARPA (David Anderson) (03/19/85)

I'm tired of waiting so as to be able to afford a real hi-fi system, and
I've been shopping for something I can afford now (in the $600 range). Any
suggestions?

I'm impressed by the NAD 3020B integrated amp, but locally I can't find it
for less than retail. Are there any reputable mail-order houses that deal
with NAD products? I'm also thinking about the Technics SLJ2 turntable
(readily available by mail), and looking for comments from owners.

Choosing speakers is really difficult for me, but some of the discussion on
this list has helped. I've auditioned the Spectrum 108A, Acoustic Research
19, AR 20, and Rauna Tyr speakers, priced at $200, $250, $350, and $450,
respectively. I really like the Raunas, but can't afford them -- and none
of the others excites me.

Comments, pointers, suggestions, reviews welcome. I'll summarize if the
response warrants it.

Concerning the choices of speakers I recently went auditioning
speakers in the ~$300 range which included both models of Acoustic
Research mentioned (AR 19, 20) along with comparitively priced Boston
Acoustics, Shnell. I finally sprung for B&W 100 (and some letter, maybe 'm'),
which stood head and shoulders above all except the more expensive AR. As I
climbed prices towards $500 the only better sounding speakers were more
expensive B&Ws with ARs still close. As I say I ended up with the B&W so
I feel you should check them out (retail $339; I got them for $299).
