[net.audio] cd cases

There has been a controversy in the CD music industry about
packaging recently. The 6" x 12" package that fits into record bins
is undoubtedly here to stay. The blister-pack, which is a pain to deal
with and doesn't stack well, is being phased out. There was some
resistance to changing that because some thought that displaying the
high-tech disc would attract sales.

Some have talked about not including the plastic clamshell "jewel-boxes"
with the CD's but fortunately protests have quieted that down for awhile
at least. There is talk in the industry about having thinner jewel
boxes though.

NEC has come up with a neat case design. It's a resin based case with
helical grooves so the playback beam can see through the case to the
disc. This is proposed for car players so no fiddling with cases and CD's
whilst driving. This, of course, would require new style players able to
deal with the case insertion. Kind of like a hard disk pack.

Of course, what you need to do is to scan the laser around and not
turn the disk at all.

_Ron:

This system was in fact once proposed by anAmerican outfit, just as the first
CDs were beginning to appear. They apparently wanted to manufacture a card
which you would insert into their player, and which would be scanned much
like a tv screen is.

However, since I have not seen any more of this system, I guess that it
died.
