After reading the review in the latest issue of High Fidelty, I went to a local audio store and listened to Sony's newest third-generation CD player. After waiting for more than two years, I found what I'd been waiting for: a slimline unit with excellent sound reproduction and a very reasonable set of programming capabilities. Sony's Unilinear Converter System and linear tracking make this player everything that the High Fidelty review claims. The remote control unit is convenient, offering both random access by track and selection by index. The linear tracking mechanism makes random selection particularly nice: the CDP-302 moves quickly and quietly from one track to the next. The layout of the controls on the front of the unit is also pleasing and convenient. Even with my modest mid-fi system (Hafler DH-220 amp, DH-110 pre-amp, and Cerwin-Vega speakers), the sound is simply fantastic! The channel separation is outstanding and there is absolutely zero noise. If you're considering acquiring a CD player in the near future, I recommend this one. The one problem that I had was in releasing the transit lever that protects the optical assembly during shipping. The manual tells you how to do it, but they leave out one important detail: DON'T SET THE PLAYER ON ITS BACK WHEN YOU'RE RELEASING THE LEVER! Instead, stand the player up on your knees with the bottom facing you, then follow the directions in the manual. Being a mechanical incompetent, I set the unit on its back and the optical assembly did not release properly and the unit refused to play (angry, unhappy, noises about salesman's parentage, etc.); of course, when I took the player back to the shop, the salesman promptly performed the correct magic on it and it played perfectly!
