The place where I buy most of my audio equipment and accessories recommends the Denon cassette tapes. I bought a few (DX7's - their mid-range chrome tape) and they sound really good. Have any of you out there had any experience, good or bad, with these tapes? The guys at the store used to sell a lot of Maxell, TDK, etc., but they now sell mainly Denon's. Any info would be appreciated. Bill Gates (hpfcla!hpfcms!bill)

<> I bought a case of Denon DX-7 tape when I purchased my Nakamichi LX-5. I used about half of them when I decided to either give them away or use them in my less demanding applications. The reason was because the tape seemed to be quite inconsistant in comparison with Maxell XL-IIS, my current tape of choice. The Denon tape does sound very good, but on a couple of samples, the highs seemed muffled and compressed. Also, one sample was apparently not compatible with the diffused-resonance dual capstan transport on my tape deck, it didn't actually jam but it sounded like it wanted to, making lots of scraping noise. I haven't had any such problem with any other brand of tape, including Maxell, TDK, or Fuji. Overall, it was a nice sounding tape, but inconsistant--And consistancy of quality is important to me.
