[net.audio] Bose 901's; Acoustats.

Well, I held off as long as I could, but what the heck - why not
jump into the Bose 901 fray. I am a former owner of a pair of 901's,
purchased in the early 70's. When I got them, I loved them, and
loved to defend them with passion against the attacks (comb filters,
muddy sound, etc. etc.). Ready to move up, I sold them last night
to a guy from csu, and dragged up an old pair of Dynaco A-25's
that have been doing service in the basement at parties, etc.

Put on pf's Wish You Were Here (CD, Yamaha CDX-1), and couldn't
believe my ears. The Dynacos had a clarity and inner detail that
were immediately and obviously noticeable. Images were much more
solid, and the sound stage was *THERE*. I must admit, the old
Boses sure could handle the power, and they sound good when you
'crank it up.' Anyway, what an eye-opener.

Now for a question. Has anyone out there had experience with
Acoustat speakers? I am interested in the entire line. Prices,
reliablilty, amplifier compatibility, etc. Reply via net mail,
and I will summarize.

Acoustat died last spring. Their assets (not patents) were purchased by the
David Hafler Corp. Too bad. I hear they were doing some interresting research
in electrostats and about to make a breakthrough. I'd be hard pressed to
recommend their used gear knowing that service would be tricky.

But Hafler put Acoustat right back in business. In fact they are in the mags
with some kind of improved transformer upgrade for owners of older stuff.
