I have also had a problem when listening to CD's through headphones, but not specifically through a Sony D5. I've got a pair of Sennheiser's (414D, I think?...there a few years old) that cannot handle the bass from the CD player without distorting miserably. These are open air phones that don't have terrific bass response in the first place and it's real annoying to have to turn the bass down to eliminate the cone breakup. I've got another pair of headphones (Pioneer something or other) that have an HPM (High Polymer Molecular) driver. These phones were supposed to be able to handle 200 watts without self-destructing (I've never tried it with my ears near them). Anyway, these headphones handle the CD bass response just fine (no breakup). These drivers aren't your standard speaker in an earmuff type thing though, they have no voice coil and drive the speaker surface across it's whole area. Sort of like the Infinity tweeters, except in a headphone. I presume the standard Walkman type headphones are going to break down under the bass transients from a D-5. Do the special D-5 headphones come with the unit or do I have to by them separate? [Add all the normal caveats so you don't get sued here]
